Happy 30th Birthday, Harry Potter

I confess.  I am a nerd.  Not in the good way, where I studied all night in school to get good grades.  No.  I sat in math class drawing chicks with huge tits and machine guns eradicating aliens.  I’m glad that art style has moved with me when I doodle slice-of-life art now.  But I got side tracked.

I am a nerd and thus being so I look at details and small notes of interest when I am reading or watching things.  I love the Harry Potter books.  A lot.  They are excellent escapes and so well written that you can’t help but get swooped up in all the magic, so to speak.  And as it is never fully said out loud in definite in the pages, there are clues that allude to the true date.

Harry Potter’s birthday is reported in the books as being “somewhere in July”.  “As the seventh month dies” and finally the day after Neville’s (July 30th). In the American Book, “HP & the Sorcerer’s Stone”, Harry reads the Daily Prophet’s story about the Gringott’s break-in as happening “on 31 July”. He then remarks it was the day he and Hagrid were there, which was his birthday. Author J.K. Rowling, and actors Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) and Richard Griffiths (Uncle Vernon) were all reported to have their birthdays on 31 July. It was later revealed that Radcliffe’s birthday is, in fact, 23rd July and that the claim that his birthday was the same as Harry Potter’s was merely a publicity stunt.

How Old Is Harry Anyway?

J.K. Rowling has told us that Harry’s birthday is July 31, which happens to be her birthday, too. But what year was Harry born?

Near the beginning of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone it says that “tomorrow, Tuesday, was Harry’s eleventh birthday.” July 31 doesn’t fall on a Tuesday very often. Most readers of that first book assumed that, because it was published in 1997, Harry attended Hogwarts during the 1990s. In 1990, July 31 fell on a Tuesday. This would mean that Harry was born in 1979 and would turn 23 in 2002.

But wait, this theory is contradicted by evidence in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, in which Harry helped celebrate Nearly Headless Nick’s deathday anniversary on October 31, 1992. Harry was 12 at that time. So this would mean that Harry was born in 1980, and that he would turn 22 in 2002.

On top of that to prove the year date once and final, is that Lily and James Potter were killed October 31, 1981, when as previous stated, Harry was a year old.
