I think that everyone is now well aware of the controversy Netflix is causing in the streaming world.
Oh, you don’t? OK, wow, I gotta say, I’m really surprised by that. Let me give you a breakdown then…
Netflix decided to raise it’s prices a whopping 60% (i.e. the one disc/unlimited streaming package that was $9.99 went to almost $18 per month).
Then it sat back and saw the angered outcry of people who were vowing to dissolve their membership with Netflix and decided that it would be easiest to split the company into two models now. So now we have Netflix (the streaming side of things) and Qwickster (the disc/game side).
Again, the outcry from the paying subscribers was enormous, and Netflix sat back and watched everyone panic, not knowing what to do with themselves.
I was one of those people.
Let me explain it to you this way. I watch a lot of stuff on Instant Queue. I’d say, because of Netflix, I was saving myself thousands of dollars a year on entertainment. No more movie theaters for me, no more $5 Blockbuster movies, no more $50 Best Buy runs. It was great! They even had an Xbox 360 app that allowed me to stream from my consol to my TV, in HD! Holy crap!
I couldn’t have been happier with Netflix for the 3 years I have been using the company’s services. The discs always came on time, in pristine condition, and customer service was phenomenal.
Then these ridiculous corporate changes were announced, and I was taken aback. Netflix? MY Netflix? How could they betray me so? Without even a clause that would grandfather longstanding customers into the same pricing scheme too! They just threw everybody into the new pricing model and said “Come at me bro”.
Well, bros, we are fighting back.
That’s right, the dedicated Netflix addicts are starting to break their chains of oppression and telling Netflix where they can go…so are some of their companies. Starz, one of the largest providers of hit movies to Netflix just pulled out.
Chris Albrecht, Starz Cheif Executive said this:
“This decision is a result of our strategy to protect the premium nature of our brand by preserving the appropriate pricing and packaging of our exclusive and highly valuable content.”
BY PRESERVING APPROPRIATE PRICING!
So what did Netflix do? They partnered with Dreamworks Studios to try and make up the loss…however that bit them in end as well in my opinion.
“Why” You ask?
Well because they only partnered with Dreamworks for the animated feature side of things. Starz supplied Netflix with hundreds of movies and TV shows. Dreamworks animation will resupply them with 22 feature films…thats it.
Now wait, there’s more.
The reason Netflix is rumored to have split its companies is because they wanted to sell the streaming side to Amazon.com.
If you swing over to the Amazon.com home page you are greeted with this letter.
Yup, Amazon.com has their very own streaming service already…and let me tell you, the selection is out of this world.
I briefly scrolled around last night in their horror section, it’s kinda my go-to genre. It is also a big make-it or break-it factor for me. Netflix’s seclection of horror has been horrid lately. Does Netflix really think people want to watch those 1-star, crappy, home video quality films? I guess so, because they have hundreds of them ready to go on instant. Worst of all, if you want any sort of Friday the 13th film you only have Jason Goes To Hell or Jason X to choose from.
After looking through the horror section of Amazon I found the Dark Shadows movies (which are super hard to find), all the Friday the 13th movies, Poltergeist, Prince of Darkness, Audition, Lady Vengeance, Dead Snow, The Host, Elvira Mistress of the Dark, Subspecies, Sleepaway Camp, Phantasm II, Creepshow, Re-Cycle, They Live, Clockwork Orange, Videodrome…and so much more.
The best part, Amazon Prime only costs $78/year. So let’s do some math…$78 / 12 = $6.50 per MONTH! Oh did I mention your first month of Amazon Prime is free? So you get 13 months for the price of 12!
Netflix $95.88/ year (streaming only). 7.99/ month.
So you switch to Amazon Prime, you get better movie/show selections, you save yourself $20 a year, and you get better shipping options through all purchases on Amazon.com.
I don’t think I can cancel my Netflix account fast enough.
What do you all think?

I have issues… HUGE issues with NEtflix now. I like it because I get 3 movies out at a time and if the post office aren’t fucking idiots that week, I get 6 movies a week on DVD. The instant isn’t where I want it to be yet. I think it has a ways to go, but by adding the K-Dramas and stuff like that, it does rank higher on my opinions.
I will look into Amazon’s streaming, but I want the physical discs more than anything. If I had my druthers I would be with GreenCine now but their turn around time is much too slow for me.
I agree, adding K-dramas was a huge success for all us foreign TV fans…but I just can’t simply turn a blind eye to how they are treating their customers now.
Also, I did a little more searching on Amazon today, and it looks like, if you have an Amazon account, you automatically get 5gigs free of cloud space. Now, that’s cool and all, but check this part out.
Amazon has an MP3 app…which is like iTunes. However when you buy stuff on Amazon OR upload your own stuff onto the cloud, you can stream it directly to your Android phone via that app. No storage taken on your phone, have your stuff ANYWHERE with ANY Amazon MP3 enabled device…pretty sick perks man.
I’m floored for this transition.
