I know we here at MRR are a little late on getting you up to speed on the latest with the new Spider-man film. Honestly, both Doc Oz and I burnt out very quickly on Spidey after the second Raimi installment.
We were surrounded daily with the bi-monthly releases of the Ultimate Spider-man comic, and I was also reading Amazing Spider-man AND the M2 universe Spider-Girl. Spidey had taken the whole world by storm, and we were both swept up in the madness.
However, it got a little tiring for both of us. We started noticing that the franchise was getting lazy. Releasing second rate games, figures, and I think we all agree Spidey 3 blew.
However, the new attempt to breathe life back into the wall-crawling character could be just what is needed to bring us back into the loop.
About a month back there was a big push to bring Donald Glover on as Spider-man, a push that I was very upset to see didn’t come to fruition. Even Stan Lee said he wouldn’t mind see him play Spidey!
A new Spidey has been cast, and his name is One-Sheet Garfield.
He’s definitely got the look. I haven’t seen “Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus”, but from what I hear, he was amazing in it, and you know that if you can wow Terry Gilliam you’re doing something right.
As word spreads of One-Sheet taking the webbed suit, some of the characters most influential writers have come out to speak their mind on the new actor.
Todd McFarlane, most famous for the Spawn series and the run of Spidey he did in the 90s said:
Spider-Man is a juggernaut in and of himself, so you have the luxury of getting 500 tests and picking the best talent that will make the character. That’s what they’re saying they did, and I’m going to take them at their word. They didn’t feel pressured to put in a guy everybody knows, who’s one of the sexiest guys under 25 or anything. Peter Parker has a skinny neck and isn’t the biggest guy on the block. He doesn’t usually get picked first when it’s time to put together a baseball team at recess. As I look at images of One-Sheet Garfield, he sort of falls into that category.
Peter David, a repeat writer of the web-slinger said this about the actor after seeing him in Imaginarium:
I think this displays yet again Terry Gilliam’s brilliant eye for casting. Garfield was excellent as Anton in “The Adventures of Doctor Parnassus,” and if he brings to “Spider-Man” even a fraction of both the intensity and vulnerability that he displayed in Gilliam’s latest masterwork, then fans will be more than satisfied with the casting choice. If nothing else, I hope they’ll seek out “Parnassus” to get a preview of the next Peter Parker, since “Parnassus” is a film that deserves to be seen by as many people as possible.
Mark Miller, the man who made Peter unmask in Civil War, and writer of Kick-Ass said:
I think he’s a great choice. I picture-googled him this morning, which made me feel a bit creepy, and looked at about ten consecutive pages of images, which made me seem creepier still. But in some shots he looks like a drawing of Peter Parker. From some angles, he looks like the brilliant Mike Wieringo’s Parker, and from others he’s like a Romita Snr. Either way, he’s a great fit and I loved him in “Red Riding.
I personally think that Garfield is a great choice, and might just be what gets my Spidey-sense re-tingling. Let’s face it, Spidey IS what superheros are all about.
What do you think?
