Comic Creator’s Reaction To New Spidey

andrew-garfield

I know we here at MRR are a little late on getting you up to speed on the latest with the new Spider-man film.  Honestly, both Doc Oz and I burnt out very quickly on Spidey after the second Raimi installment.

We were surrounded daily with the bi-monthly releases of the Ultimate Spider-man comic, and I was also reading Amazing Spider-man AND the M2 universe Spider-Girl.  Spidey had taken the whole world by storm, and we were both swept up in the madness.

However, it got a little tiring for both of us.  We started noticing that the franchise was getting lazy.  Releasing second rate games, figures, and I think we all agree Spidey 3 blew.

However, the new attempt to breathe life back into the wall-crawling character could be just what is needed to bring us back into the loop.

About a month back there was a big push to bring Donald Glover on as Spider-man, a push that I was very upset to see didn’t come to fruition.  Even Stan Lee said he wouldn’t mind see him play Spidey!

A new Spidey has been cast, and his name is One-Sheet Garfield.

He’s definitely got the look.  I haven’t seen “Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus”, but from what I hear, he was amazing in it, and you know that if you can wow Terry Gilliam you’re doing something right.

As word spreads of One-Sheet taking the webbed suit, some of the characters most influential writers have come out to speak their mind on the new actor.

Todd McFarlane, most famous for the Spawn series and the run of Spidey he did in the 90s said:

Spider-Man is a juggernaut in and of himself, so you have the luxury of getting 500 tests and picking the best talent that will make the character. That’s what they’re saying they did, and I’m going to take them at their word. They didn’t feel pressured to put in a guy everybody knows, who’s one of the sexiest guys under 25 or anything. Peter Parker has a skinny neck and isn’t the biggest guy on the block. He doesn’t usually get picked first when it’s time to put together a baseball team at recess. As I look at images of One-Sheet Garfield, he sort of falls into that category.

Peter David, a repeat writer of the web-slinger said this about the actor after seeing him in Imaginarium:

I think this displays yet again Terry Gilliam’s brilliant eye for casting. Garfield was excellent as Anton in “The Adventures of Doctor Parnassus,” and if he brings to “Spider-Man” even a fraction of both the intensity and vulnerability that he displayed in Gilliam’s latest masterwork, then fans will be more than satisfied with the casting choice. If nothing else, I hope they’ll seek out “Parnassus” to get a preview of the next Peter Parker, since “Parnassus” is a film that deserves to be seen by as many people as possible.

Mark Miller, the man who made Peter unmask in Civil War, and writer of Kick-Ass said:

I think he’s a great choice. I picture-googled him this morning, which made me feel a bit creepy, and looked at about ten consecutive pages of images, which made me seem creepier still. But in some shots he looks like a drawing of Peter Parker. From some angles, he looks like the brilliant Mike Wieringo’s Parker, and from others he’s like a Romita Snr. Either way, he’s a great fit and I loved him in “Red Riding.

I personally think that Garfield is a great choice, and might just be what gets my Spidey-sense re-tingling.  Let’s face it, Spidey IS what superheros are all about.

Chris Evans Talks Cap

chris evans cap

Empire had the right idea when they chose to talk with Chris Evans right around Independence Day.  The first avenger talked about using the infamous shield, and wearing the suit.

“It’s an amazing costume. Given the fact that his costume is red, white and blue, and it’s tight, and it could be kind of flash and over the top – and given the fact that the movie takes place in the ‘40s and ‘50s – they’ve done a really good job of making it look really cool.”

“I think everyone that’s going to see it is going to say, ‘Okay, well done. Well done. I think they got the costume right. The casting they completely ruined, but the costume they nailed!’”

In comparison to his lithe, skin-tight Fantastic Four costume, Evans says: “[In the FF suit] …you could move around quite well. This is a little more cumbersome. It doesn’t exactly breathe the way the Fantastic Four costume breathed, but it’s the way it should be. Any type of World War II uniform would be a little chunky, and I think that’s what kind of gives it its character.”

Are you getting pumped for this new superhero installment?  Or are you afraid they’ll kill the franchise again like they did on the first attempt?

Walking Dead Interview

TWD-Greg-Nicotero-560

AMCTV.com has a really wicked interview with Greg Nicotero, master of the modern zombie.

Here’s a quick snippet:

Q: You’ve been creating zombies for George Romero for years. What made you want to tackle The Walking Dead?

A: I’ve been best friends with Frank Darabont since before he directed The Shawshank Redemption, and we share a similar interest and nostalgic devotion to George Romero and Night of the Living Dead. We started talking about this project probably three or four years ago, when Frank was talking about wanting to do something different with zombies, and what we could do to make these guys look fresh and original. And from then on, it’s just been like, Hey man! We get to create zombies!

Q: How do these zombies differ from the ones you created for Romero?

A: We used the graphic novel certainly as inspiration. We’ve always tried to push the envelope, and because I’ve done so many other projects it’s always one of those things where you finish a movie and go, “Oh man next time I know how we can make it better. And after that I know how we can make it even better than that.” We’ve taken everything that we’ve learned on all these other projects, and applied them in terms of using new materials and new techniques – even something as simple as a zombie getting shot in the head: We really sat down and worked through the best way to make that look realistic and practical.

It feels like 3/4 of my posts as of late have all revolved around this groundbreaking tv show, but for good reason.  We’ve brought you casting news, makeup tests, and even a simulated gif showing the stages of decay.

Well our friends over at Bloody Disgusting have outdone themselves with this post.  Not only did they post up the “Zombie School” video, but they also got us a snapshot of one of the zombies from actual production!

Awesome Superhero Art

a-christopher-uminga-1

Christopher Uminga is just an amazing artist/geek who was recently at the introductory C2E2 convention here in Chicago, along with our favorite fan Junk.

Christopher has some samples of his work up on his website, and one part of them are superheroes.  Check these out!

Tell me you don’t want to own all of these!  For all of the rest of the set, and to check out his other work visit his website.

Cthulhu Is Coming…

cthulhu2

Long story short Cthulhu is a badass.

It is the brainchild of H.P. Lovecraft, it is one of the “old gods” that live in the sunken city of R’lyeh, deep in the Pacific Ocean.

Cthulhu was made popular in 1926, when the story The Call of Cthulhu was published in Weird Tales magazine.  Don’t worry there are so many pronunciations of the name that no matter how you say it, you aren’t wrong.  The most popular pronunciation is kah-thoo-loo.

So, why will you be an instant fan if you aren’t already, and why will you be a mega fan if you already have as much Cthulhu paraphernalia as possible?

Alan Moore is finally releasing his comic, The Necronomicon.  This book has been in the works for a while, but now it is finally ready.  According to artist Jacen Burrows:

Way back in 1994 Alan Moore wrote a short prose story for The Starry Wisdom: A Tribute to H. P. Lovecraft. In 2003 Antony Johnston and myself adapted the Courtyard for Avatar with Moore standing in as acting editor on the project. Now here we are in 2010 and we are finally getting ready to release Neonomicon the sequel scripted by Alan Moore himself. The story centers on an FBI team investigating a spree of grisly crimes that started at the end of the Courtyard. The story features a brilliant deconstruction and modernization of the H.P. Lovecraft world as only Alan Moore could do it. And believe me, Lovecraft channeled through Alan Moore is a dark, disturbing, mind warping thing. Those unfamiliar with Lovecraft or the Courtyard should still find it an intensely affecting work of horror.

Necronomicon will be published by Avatar Press, and I’m super pumped!

Meet Your Heroes

Some concept art has recently been released on what the costumes for our new Captain America and Thor will look like.  Now I personally have never been a huge Thor fan.  But Chris Helmsworth was awesome in both “A Perfect Getaway” and also “Star Trek”, so I’ll totally check it out for that.   One thing I love about both of these costumes is that they keep the classic look from the comics, but bring to light the real world protection that was also shown in books like “Civil War” and “Ultimate Avengers”.

Be A Zombie On The Walking Dead

The-Walking-Dead1

This is really, really exciting stuff.  We’ve been reporting on The Walking Dead casting progress as the big named actor roles were cast.  Now there is some even more exciting news that you can really gear up for, especially if you live in the Atlanta area.

According to On Location Vacations, Frank Darabont and his crew will be shooting in the Fairlie-Poplar District of Atlanta.  If you aren’t familiar with the comic that is where the first few issues of the comic take place.

What are the rules and regulations for becoming immortalized as a zombie?  OLV says:

The final scenes of the pilot episode and scenes for the second episode would be filmed during daylight hours over the course of two (2) weekends. The first weekend would be scheduled for June 11–13; the second weekend is scheduled for July 2–4. [...] In the meantime, the production company is still looking for extras to appear as zombies in the series.

But, all extras must attend ZOMBIE SCHOOL! All of the “zombies’ who have been chosen so far have been put through the paces and have already been attending “class” all week, they’ve also been told they can’t discuss anything about the production and may be fired for even the slightest hint about the production on Twitter, FB, etc.

If you think you can handle being a zombie, you can email your information to twdextras@gmail.com, you will need to have a “flexible schedule” from June to September.

So pack your bags, practice your groans, and get out there!

The Black Pearl Is Now A Film

TheBlackPearl-1996comicbook

According to Bloody Disgusting we’re about to see a nice new side of Mark Hamill.  If you don’t know who that is first of all…really?

Second, he was Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars Trilogy.  He also voiced the Joker in probably the best animated Batman series to date.

You know…this guy.

So what exactly is it that we are going to be seeing from him in “The Black Pearl”?  His writing and directing side!

Mark penned the story in screenplay format about 14 years ago, but was instead purchased and published in comic form through Dark Horse.  Now, after many years in hibernation, and almost vanishing as well as Hamill did from the public eye, it’s back!

Considered a “dark and edgy thriller” the team hopes to get an R rating to go along with their $7 million budget.  The story focuses on Luther Drake, a troubled man who becomes a costumed vigilante “hero” by accident and media pressure.

Spider-Man comes to the rescue in comic book store robbery

Michael Baulderstone, 45, was dressed as Spider-Man as part of a fancy dress open day at comic Centre in Adelaide, Australia, confronted the man when he claims he spotted him taking the £100 book.

Security tapes show Mr Baulderstone, addressing the man before stopping him and confiscating the book. On top of that, a group of Jedi knights blocked the door to prevent him from escaping, along with The Flash.

Images From The Black Hole

black-hole-comic-book

No, I don’t mean that Black Hole.  I mean images from the graphic novel you’ve probably never heard of.  Well, I’m going to remedy that for you right now.

The comic was written by Charles Burns and the publication ran over a span of 10 years for the 12 issue series.  It dealt with sexually transmitted diseases.  Well more to the point, it dealt with the aftermath of STDs when they caused grotesque mutations in the youth, as we all know they do in real life.  This turns the kids into outcasts, and they seek solitude in the forest on the outskirts of town.

The pictures below are mocked up next to their character image from the book, enjoy, and if you still haven’t bought your copy of Black Hole from Amazon, click the cover of the book at the end to do so.

The pictures were taken by Max Oppenheim with the help of prosthetic artist Bill Turpin for 125 Magazine.  Check out the rest of the set at The Operators.

Jonah Hex Image

jonahhex1et6

People seem to be getting pretty excited for Jonah Hex, the story of a disfigured, part time bounty hunter with a messed up face and Confederate uniform. I’m not sure why though. Is it because of Josh Brolin and Megan Fox? Or the fact that people have been wanting to see this comic adapted for a long time?

Everyone knows how incredibly fickle we geeks are about accuracy. And I will give Josh Brolin credit, when he originally donned the makeup for the first time he was incredibly passionate about getting every last detail right.  However there was one flaw. If you look at the comic image, the skin around his eye is pulled down and you can see a lot of his eyeball. Josh wanted this effect added in, until he found out that the long days of sandy exposure could cause him to go blind.

Though everything else looks pretty true to character…I’m just not impressed. Are you?

Elephant In The Room

avengers

I’m sure many of you out there were wondering just what was taking us so long to bring up the Avengers film with the recent rumors that have been floating around.  Well, that was just it, we wanted to wait for many of the rumors to blow over.  Fanboy excitement overloads our circuits here, and we’ve found that we need at least a 24 hour buffer on just about all things geek before we settle down and look at everything clearly.

So that being said, it looks as though many of the rumors have blown over, and I’m going to put it up here for all to see.  Variety is reporting that the one, the only, Joss Whedon is in final negotiations to direct the Avengers picture.

Each finger represents how badass I am times a million.  Go get a calculator.

This doesn’t come without a substantial amount of work I can only imagine.  Though the screenplay was penned by Zak Penn, whose screenplay lineup is 99% superhero films and 1% PCU, I’m sure Joss will come in and do some rewrites on the script to successfully “Whedonize” it for our viewing pleasure.  Which is a very, very good thing, I mean did you see X-Men 3?

My biggest concern with this is, this movie is going to be so heavily influenced by studio decisions I don’t know how Joss will handle it.  Granted, he’s a total badass, this is the guy who can create a show, have it taken off the air after barely 10 episodes, then have fandom revive it into a badass film.  Studio execs see Serenity as a total flop, but I think they can see how quickly we are captivated by Joss’ projects.  Just look at the success of Doctor Horrible!  So even if they are breathing down his neck constantly, he will be able to keep it true, keep it real, and make it amazing.

So I guess all that is left to say is, “AVENGER FANS……..ASSEMBLE!”

(Was it just me, or was Hawkeye pretty lame in every sense of the word?)

Walking Dead Now Has A Leading Man!

moorewd9cover

Last week, we reported on some casting developments on the walking dead series.  We had casting news for Shane, but the part of Rick was in question.  In the updated news it looks like our former Hacker did indeed crash and burn (seriously watch Hackers if you don’t get that), Jonny Lee Miller is out of the running for the main character, and you might be a little surprised by who is in.

One-Sheet Lincoln aka the sign holding guy that was obsessed with Keira Knightley in Love Actually has been cast as the lead in the new series.  One-Sheet hasn’t done too much other recognizable work as of yet, but I’m hoping this bodes well for the show because we as viewers wont have any preconceived notions about what to expect based on the cast alone.

I think it’s a smart choice to keep casting virtual unknowns for this show…what do you think?  Do you think Jonny Lee was robbed of the part?

Emily Dumps Cap for Batman?

captain_america

MTV.com is reporting that actress Emily Blunt has officially turned down the role of Peggy Carter in the upcoming “Captain America: The First Avenger” movie. Which, like most things on the internet, then sparked the rumor that the reason for her decision is because she’s in line to play Catwoman in Batman 3.

Can we believe it? Well lets just say it’s not a good sign when even the anonymous source sayings “Now this is just a rumor but…”

Got an interesting email this morning from an industry insider friend of mine. Now he’s the first to admit that this should be taken as rumor, so let me echo that sentiment: TAKE THIS AS RUMOR.
Our insider emailed me saying that Emily Blunt has recently turned down the female lead in “Captain America”

Frankly, I didn’t even know that she was up for a part in the film. But that wasn’t the main reason he wrote in, alright. No, he thinks that this story may have some Batman 3 influence to it.

My feelings aside on Batman having yet ANOTHER love interest in the third Batman, this could be a pretty cool addition to the next Nolan incarnation. But once again…it’s just a rumor.

What isn’t a rumor however is how excited the brass over at Marvel are about the casting of Chris Evans as their man in blue.

Editor-in-chief Joe Quesada said described the casting as “a home run.”

“Here you have a guy who absolutely embodies every aspect of Cap, including the look and feel of the character,” he told Comic Book Resources. “Kevin Feige was absolutely beaming after meeting with Chris and seeing what he could do, and I’ve got to tell you, I think he’s perfect as well. See, that to me is the beauty of the movies that we at Marvel produce. We know the characters better than anyone outside of our fans, and we know how important it is to cast just that right person. We aren’t a bunch of Hollywood execs who don’t understand the source material or it’s history; it’s Marvel guys and gals making Marvel movies, and that’s a huge difference.”

Still doesn’t answer the question however in who would win in a fight, Batman or Captain America. (*whisper* Batman would kick the crap out of Cap. *whisper*)
