This is a pretty cool opportunity for all of us that live in Chicago. As devoted listeners to the show I know that everyone knows how much I love going to conventions and experiencing things that are out of my norm.
Well now you have the chance of a lifetime to experience that with me!
This Saturday, May 15th I will be at the Acen Anime Convention being held at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center from 10am-6:30pm. Now technically this isn’t in Chicago per se, it’s in Rosemont, IL. That is just a triviality though.
Now I’m not really an anime person, but I’m more that willing to step outside my boundaries and hang out with cosplayers. If we have a decent group let’s hit a bar after.
So who’s with me? If you’re in send me a tweet @andrewmarcec and let me know to look for you! We’ll coordinate!
Found this awesome new energy drink this morning while surfing Google Reader.

It’s made by a company called Harcos Laboratory, and caffeinated blood seems to be their specialty. Because they also sell just straight up Blood Energy Potion, among other things. But if you’re looking for a quick pick-me-up and had to choose between regular human blood and ZOMBIE blood, I think the choice is dang pretty clear.

Now I have no idea what this actually tastes like mind you. It could be heinous. But even if it does taste awful, and you’re left clinching your stomach in the fetal position trying not to yak, at least you’ll have a sweet Zombie Blood bad laying next to you! And that is a win in my book any day.
Last week I wrote a post talking about Philip K Dick, and his belief in an alternate “Matrix” like alternate world. Hopefully you got a chance to read it and also watch that awesome documentary on the man that I put up as well.
Because if you did, then you saw first hand that he was a man who didn’t believe in random coincidences. In PKD’s world, everything was planned. So it’s fitting that I’m posting the very next week about the next short story of his to get the silver screen treatment…”The Adjustment Bureau”. And the kicker? It’s about just that. Are our lives planned out for us, or is there such a thing as free will? And if so, what are we willing to sacrifice to keep it.
I gotta say, I think it looks pretty incredible. What do you all think?
Last week we asked you, what the best video game based cartoon was? And the winner of round 1 (out of 3) was…

That means the brothers will advance to the final round where they’ll face off against the winners of the next two rounds in a cartoon death match! It’s gonna get bloody and probably go a little something like this…
(Poor little shoe)
So lets get on with it and announce the contenders for round 2 of who’s the “Best Video Game Based Cartoon?”
Ding ding ding ding…round 2!

Donkey Kong Country

Donkey Kong Country was one of the earliest television series to be computer-animated to match an artistic style and garnered critical acclaim in France and Japan but only marginal success elsewhere. Several elements of the series appeared in later Donkey Kong Country video games such as Donkey Kong 64, which was released a year after the show began airing on Fox.
Dragon’s Lair

The series chronicles the adventures of Dirk the Daring, who is best knight in King Ethelred’s kingdom. Dirk performs all sorts of great deeds while protecting the kingdom and his love, Princess Daphne.
The show was great and boasted an unusual feature: to keep the show in the spirit of the game, before each commercial break the storyteller would ask what the viewer would do to solve the problem facing Dirk the Daring. After the commercial break, the outcomes of the various choices were shown before Dirk acts on the correct idea (with the occasional exception) to save the day.
Mega Man

Dr. Light and Dr. Wily were brilliant scientists in the field of robotics, who worked together in a laboratory trying to advance the science. One day, they finished an extremely advanced prototype, but shortly after being activated, it started destroying the laboratory. Dr. Light immediately believed that the prototype’s guidance system, which Dr. Wily had personally programmed, was the source of the problem and concluded they would start over again. Angered, Dr. Wily attempted to steal the plans later that night, but Dr. Light catches him. Wily is able to steal the plans after knocking Dr. Light down, and goes off to what is apparently an abandoned area, and modifies the old robot prototype into Proto Man.
Later, Dr. Light builds Rock and Roll, advanced robots with personalities, along with Ice Man, Guts Man, and Cut Man. Dr. Wily and Proto Man go and steal the robots, reprogramming the latter three robots as henchmen. Dr. Wily attempts to reprogram Rock and Roll at his lab later, but Rock decides to trick Dr. Wily. He tells Dr. Wily that Dr. Light also built “super warrior robots”, and that if Rock and Roll are let go, he’ll tell him how to defeat the robots. Rock uses this lie (Dr. Wily believing robots can’t lie) to cause a distraction and escape with Roll. Dr. Light decides to reprogram and reoutfit Rock into Mega Man, who from then on keeps the world safe. This tale is told in Episode 1, “The Beginning”.
Pac-Man
The show follows the adventures of the title character, Pac-Man, his wife Pepper, their child Pac-Baby, their dog Chomp-Chomp and their cat Sour Puss. The family lives in Pac-Land, a place in which the geography and architecture seem to revolve primarily around spheres and sphere-like shapes. Most episodes of the show center around the ongoing battle between the Pac family and their only known enemies, the Ghost Monsters: Blinky, Pinky, Inky, Clyde, and Sue. They work for Mezmaron, (a mysterious figure who resembles Darth Vader and acts similarly to Gargamel), whose sole mission is to locate and control the source of “Power Pellets”, which serve as the primary food and power source for the city, and also as the deus ex machina in virtually every episode.
Wing Commander Academy

The series featured many ships introduced in the Wing Commander video games. The Scimitar and Broadsword were the primary fighters and bombers flown by the main characters, with the Dralthi and Grikath fulfilling those roles for the Kilrathi. As in Wing Commander I, the TCS Tiger’s Claw was a Bengal class strike carrier. Individual episodes also featured cameo appearances from ships introduced in later games such as Wing Commander III’s Arrow, Hellcat and Longbow and Wing Commander IV’s Avenger. None of these ships are mentioned by name. A number of new capital ships were introduced by the series including the Achilles class destroyer and the Agan Ra Sivar class dreadnaught.

Alright people, make your choice in the poll below!
[poll id="18"]

Are you a fan of mech warriors, anime, and live in Japan?
Well now there is the perfect place for you to curb your otaku cravings and have a place to feel accepted. It’s the Gundam Cafe in Tokyo’s Akibahara district.
Yes, now you can throw on your mobile suit, or assemble your mechanical lions and go grab a coffee…where you could possibly battle other meched out fanboys!
Ok, so that wont really happen, but you might make a new friend!
So what the heck is a Gundam?

Mobile Suite Gundam is one of Japan’s most internationally recognized animes. It follows the story of a young boy who pilots a giant mechanical war suite called a “Mobile Suit”. Since 1979 the series has had multiple spin-offs and the full lot of marketing ploys.
The Gundam Cafe is operated by Japanese toy manufacturer Bandai, and offers some very unique features you wont see anywhere else.
Visitors will find waitresses sporting their favorite uniform from the series, a corner store selling everything from Gundam candy called ningyo-yaki to Gundam coasters, but also many scaled replicas from the show.
Replicas like:
A 1:1 scale V-fin antenna

A 1:12 scale model Gundam

Gundam themed toilets

Another key feature that Bandai is doing to keep people interested and coming back is actually pretty interesting. As the show progressed from 1979-now there were changes made in the suits, so the show saw an evolution as time progressed. Bandai wants the same to happen to the cafe. As time progresses they want to make alterations to the cafe that would coincide with the changes in the show. Gundam Cafe is currently in Version 1, in honor of the 30th anniversary of the show.

I think that this is a really cool idea for a restaurant. All of us are fans of something, and when we get together in our groups to discuss, we always talk about wanting to have a really cool themed place we could meet. I think Japan is really going to start a trend with these evolving themed restaurants, hopefully they will bleed into America a bit and we can stray away from the 50′s diner cliche.
Plus, if you were a big collector this would be a great way to get some classic memorabilia, or even just learn more about the show you love and make friends with similar interests.
What do you think? What is a fan cafe you would like to see here in the states?
Thanks Time Out Tokyo!
I’m a pretty vocal person about the oddities that I have on my Netflix queue, but there are even some films that I am even ashamed to admit that I truly enjoy. I’m going to go out on a limb here and tell you all just a few of those films that, by all logic are terrible, but I still love them.
You can judge me all you want but remember, you have these movies too! So don’t be ashamed, comment below and let us know what films you hate to love, but are so damn proud that you do.
Here are just a few of mine:
Elivra: Mistress of the Dark
DOA: Dead or Alive
Cutie Honey
Night of the Comet
Black Roses
Showdown in Little Tokyo
What are yours?

“There is a new sport created by some people, in which basically a person runs on the surface of water. It may sound absolutely impossible but it’s true. The sport is called Liquid Mountaineering. There are some historical statements that suggest that this sport was created by the Greek, but now it is recreated and it’s one of the most impossible looking activities that anyone has seen.
The sport is all about running on water. Science tells us that with the right angle and speed anything can bounce off the surface of water for some time before it sinks. The perfect example is of a rock that when thrown with the right amount of speed, spin and angle, it starts bouncing on water and touches the surface many times before sinking. If we could follow the same set of rules that enable the rock to bounce, we can bounce too.
The things necessary for liquid mountaineering are; good quality rubber running shoes, preferably winter season, a cold lake, and a good entry point to the lake. All you have to do is start running towards the bank of the lake and keep running with top speed placing every step at such an angle that instead of thumping on water with the whole foot at once, the foot should skim the surface from the heel to the toes. The process could be perfected only with practice, but it definitely is possible to take 3, 4 or more steps on the surface before sinking.”

Russian Governor Claims He Was Abducted by Aliens
The governor of a Russian republic and former president of the World Chess Federation told a TV station that he had been abducted by aliens, who communicated with him telepathically.
The Russian government apparently believes him.
Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, the governor of Kalmykia, told a popular Russian television host that the aliens came for him in his apartment on September 18, 1997. According to a report on ABC News, Ilyumzhinov said that the aliens didn’t make themselves known to the rest of the world because they weren’t ready, adding that he communicated with them telepathically because there wasn’t enough oxygen.
“I believe I talked to them and saw them. I perhaps wouldn’t believe it if it wasn’t for 3 witnesses — my driver, my minister and my assistant,” who were apparently in the apartment at the time, he reportedly said.
According to a report on Russian news website GZT.ru, State Duma deputy Andrei Lebedev doesn’t believe that the governor was simply shown around the alien spaceship and released. Lebedev wants to find out what else happened to the president — and he wants Russian president Dmitry Medvedev to interrogate the abductee.
Russian officials fear Ilyumzhinov may have given the aliens “secret information,” according to the Echo of Moscow radio station.

During his life, Phillip K. Dick produced a staggering amount of work. Stories just seemed to pour out of his imagination and were unlike anything that has come before.
How could one man’s imagination produce such viciously original worlds? Well towards the end of his life, he started to believe that he hadn’t made them up at all. But that they were actually REAL.
Five years before his untimely death, Philip started having mystical experiences that affected his everyday life. What these experiences were he never disclosed. But they lead him to start wondering if what he had imagined for his stories was real and if life was just an illusion or the creation of each person’s subjectivity.

PKD also did a TON of drugs during his life, and had a naturally paranoid personality. But…maybe he was paranoid for a reason. Check out the clip from the press conference where he made this announcement below, and decide for yourself.

Just released is the first images from the American re-make of “Let the Right One In”. This is Chloe Grace Moretz as Abby the little vampire girl.
This is based off the Swedish novel “Lat den Ratte Komma In” by John Ajvide Lindqvist.
The American remake, “Let Me In” is being directed by Matt Reeves and is set to release Oct. 1.

What do you think? I’m personally pretty against this remake, and am not impressed by the photo.
Thanks Bloody Disgusting

I have no idea how long this video will stay up, but J.J.Abrams’s trailer for his Spielberg tribute project “Super 8″ leaked late last night during a midnight screening of “Iron Man 2″. And…it looks AWESOME.
Cryptic, dirty, and explosive. What else could you want from the baby of Spielberg and Abrams! Can’t wait to see this on the big screen tomorrow night when my wife and I go see “Iron Man 2″!
