Locke and Key TV Series Picked Up

locke-key-05

If you aren’t aware of the amazing comic series Locke and Key, I won’t blame you or even douse you in gasoline and make you light your own match.  It’s not a hugely popular book like The Walking Dead or Y: The Last Man or The Boys.  All in all though, Locke and Key is on that level and deserves the respect the others got.  And if you hadn’t heard of Walking, Y, or Boys, go grab your fire-sticks and start rubbing, I’ll be there in a second with the splishy-splashy.

Here is the official synapsos of the series:

Locke & Key tells of Keyhouse, an unlikely New England mansion, with fantastic doors that transform all who dare to walk through them…. and home to a hate-filled and relentless creature that will not rest until it forces open the most terrible door of them all…! Acclaimed suspense novelist and New York Times best-selling author Joe Hill (Heart-Shaped Box) creates an all-new story of dark fantasy and wonder, with astounding artwork from Gabriel Rodriguez. Hill has received the Bram Stoker Award for Best Fiction Collection, the British Fantasy Award for Best Collection and Best Short Story, and the Sydney J. Bounds Best Newcomer Award-2007, among his growing collection of critical accolades.
So, not only has the comic book been green lit to be made into a TV series but Fox has handed in a series commitment to the Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci- produced small screen adaptation of the graphic novel, Locke & Key by Stephen King’s son, Joe Hill.  Apparently, Steven Spielberg wil;l also be involved with the project (Dreamworkds)  and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicals -Josh Friedman will be the showrunner on the series.

Here is the video / comic book trailer: (just a pre-note, it doesn’t do the book justice at all)

I highly recommend picking up the comic.  Right now, it is in it’s 4th series and I couldn’t love them more.  It just keeps getting better and better.  Normally I don’t like doing the leg work for people but this is a series I need to stress how great it really is… so, here:

Book 2: Head Games

Lost Rod Serling Interview

film-twilight-zone

io9 reported the other day on some great interviews that were categorized as “lost”.

They featured Rod Serling talking about The Twilght Zone, very openly and honestly.  James Gunn interviewed Mr. Serling in 1970 for a series of film called “Science Fiction in Literature”, however because of legal issues the interviews were locked away.

Thanks to Youtube we now have this awesome piece of sci-fi history at our fingertips!

Doctor Who Falls Victim To The Half Seasons

doctor-who-matt-smith

During the course of the Edinburgh International Television Festival, Steven Moffat revealed that the next 13 episode season of Doctor Who will be split into two parts.

Sigh.

The first half, or “spring” arc will be a seven episode run, and the “autumn” arc will be a six episode run.  Steven also mentioned that these shortened seasons aren’t due to any sort of mid-season hiatus, but are to be seen as two separate story lines.

Looking at the next series I thought what this show needs is a big event in the middle [...] I kept referring to a mid-season finale. So we are going to make it two series – seven episodes at Easter building to an earth-shattering climax, a cliffhanger we could never normally do because it would be too long before it came back. An enormous game-changing cliffhanger that will change everything. The wrong expression would be to say we are splitting it in two. We are making it two separate series [...] With an Easter series, an autumn series and a Christmas special, you are never going to be more than few months from the new series of Doctor Who [...] Tart that I am, we will now have two first nights and two finales, twice as many event episodes as we had before.

I am very much against these half seasons.  It really irks me.  Let alone the fact that for the new series of Doctor Who the first four seasons were all 24 episodes a piece, then suddenly Moffat takes over and we get 13 episode seasons.  Now you’re telling me that I’m getting these seasons…IN TWO HALVES!

I like the idea of the two separate story arcs, but this is getting old.  I mean 13 episodes is barely even half a full season of a show, BBC or no, I’m on the ropes with this.

Where are you?

Walking Dead Trailer

walkingdeadyoutube

Hey all.  Usually I wouldn’t pass around leaked “hand held” cam’d trailer footage, mostly because I think it distracts from the awesomeness that is the mystique of the yet unreleased and bad footage…. but this one is just too hard to pass up. One-Sheet, of course, is the Walking Dead guru here, and I hate to step on toes…. kinda…. but I had to jump on this as fast as I could before it was taken off “teh int3rw3bz.”

Hope you enjoy the Comic-Con sneak peak of the soon to be best show on tv…

Interview:

AMC posted up this phenomenal interview with Gale Ann Hurd:

The producer of such genre hits as The Terminator and Aliens describes The Walking Dead’s blockbuster potential, its commonalities with Piranha, and what makes zombies only the second-most dangerous characters in the series.

Q: What attracted you to The Walking Dead?

A: I have been a longtime fan of the comic. I also love the zombie genre, my zombie fandom going way back to Night of the Living Dead. And The Walking Dead is truly the ultimate representation of that sensibility in the comic book genre.

Q: You began your career working for Roger Corman. Does The Walking Dead remind you of his horror movies in any way?

A: Roger produced classic genre films as well as straightforward exploitation movies. If you go back to his Edgar Allan Poe films, the unpredictability of human nature is at the core of both. From Roger’s New World Pictures films, especially those written by John Sayles, like Piranha, they share the complex character elements of Robert Kirkman’s comic book series as adapted and directed by Frank Darabont.

Q: Frank Darabont directed the pilot, but other directors are helming the following episodes. Have you found it difficult to balance their visions with Frank’s?

A: No it’s actually been ideal since Frank directed the pilot adjacent to the subsequent episodes. Typically a pilot is shot months in advance, and there’s an intervening period during which the cast might lose the cohesiveness they shared while filming the first episode. In out case, the cast worked with Frank for our 14-day pilot shoot and then immediately began work on the next five episodes. In addition, Frank has spent a great deal of time on set, and is always available to us. Frank’s writing is both evocative in setting the tone and feel of each scene and quite specific vis a vis character, so it’s pretty easy for our directors to stay on the same page.

Q: You’re known for producing blockbusters like Terminator and Aliens. How is The Walking Dead similar?

A: I think what our series shares in common with those films in particular is that the best genre films are character driven. And while they have an intriguing premise and terrific special effects, at the end of the day they’re rooted in complex characters and great stories. At the same time, neither compromises on production value: Every eight days we shoot a miniature version of a tentpole movie. What’s so wonderful about The Walking Dead is that we’re able to explore human nature in its most depraved as well as its most humanitarian in each episode. We strip each character down to their most basic survival instincts — or lack thereof. It’s actually the zombies who are the most predictable: You know what zombies are after. What you can’t anticipate is how one surviving human is going to interact with another. And that’s what keeps the series fresh and compelling.

Q: Robert Kirkman has said he hopes the show goes on for 27 seasons. Can you envision that?

A: Oh absolutely! He’s sitting next to me right now, and we’ve talked about how our ensemble cast members either transcend or fall victim to their baser human instincts, so there’s plenty of fodder for at least 27 seasons.

Q: You’re getting ready to head to Comic-Con. As a veteran there, what are you looking forward to?

A: We’re absolutely thrilled that AMC has agreed to let us screen exclusive footage from Frank’s pilot episode for our Comic-Con audience, for the very first time anywhere. Frank and I are fans ourselves, and we want fans of The Walking Dead to see sequences that can really sink their teeth into [Laughs]. I’m hoping there will be a great deal of zombie love.

Q: Now that we’ve gotten a good look at the walkers, tell me honestly: Do they creep you out?

A: I love them, are you kidding?! I’m a genre girl from way back — this is my idea of heaven. Yesterday we were all looking at zombie bite tests Greg [Nicotero] created that almost made the videographer throw up, and all I could do was say, “That’s awesome, I love it!” I think that anyone who’s a fan of the genre or a fan of Robert Kirkman’s work will not be disappointed when they see the series.

Q: Speaking of Greg, he got dressed as a walker for one of the episodes. Do you have any inclination to do the same?

A: Well, you know, [Laughs] maybe Season 2. You don’t want all of your dreams fulfilled in the first season. So I’m very much hoping that we’ll get an order for Season 2, and I’ll be first to send in my application to attend zombie school!

This post would be nothing without AMC and the awesome pictures from Bloody Disgusting.

More On Location Shots Of The Walking Dead!

wdb1

I’m so giddy as I write this post right now.  These set photos look AWESOME!

What’s even better, Frank Darabont is giddy as well…

“I’d like to do 20 years of zombie TV!”

MTV was on set with Frank Darabont recently and saw hoards of zombies, a tank, and SO MUCH MORE!  While they were there Frank, in between gushing about how awesome zombie TV is, said that the show would diverge slightly from the original book.

We’re going to follow the Robert Kirkman narrative pretty closely, but we’re giving ourselves permission to veer off path and find the interesting detours [...] We’ve got hundreds of zombies. We’ve got a downed helicopter; it just goes on and on. It’s crazy – all on a TV budget.

Also, Comic Book Movie has a great video you all need to watch.

Full Walking Dead Lineup

TheWalkingDead

This sounds a little backwards for TV, but people lately have been obsessing about who will be writing/directing the episodes of this show.  When Frank Darabont signed on the internet exploded with excitement, granted he does have some phenomenal movies behind him, and from what we can see, a genuine love for the genre.

How odd is it though that the entire fan base of this show is more worried about who is behind the scenes than in front of the camera?  Personally, I think that is the way it should be.  I LOVE that the fans are not only super involved in all the goings on in this show, but the cast/crew/company WANTS it that way!

I mean look at all this information they are releasing on the production of this series!  Plus, fans know that they can trust Darabont, which is one thing that hardly any of us have in directors anymore.  The Mist solidified his career.  He had balls to do what he did, and that’s why him being involved with The Walking Dead is so exciting, he’ll be faithful.

Anyway enough of my rambling here, you want the lineup, here it is:

The directors for the first six are:

1) Frank Darabont (The Mist, The Shawshank Redemption)
2) Michelle MacLaren (“Breaking Bad,” “X-Files”)
3) Gwyneth Horder-Payton (“The Shield,” “BSG”)
4) Johan Renck (“Breaking Bad”)
5) Ernest Dickerson (“The Wire,” “Dexter”)
6) Guy Ferland (“The Shield,” “Sons of Anarchy”)

The writers for the first six are:

1) Frank Darabont (The Mist, The Shawshank Redemption)
2) Frank Darabont (The Mist, The Shawshank Redemption)
3) Frank Darabont (The Mist, The Shawshank Redemption), Chic Eglee, Jack LoGuidice. (Chic: “The Shield,” “Dexter.” Jack: “Sons of Anarchy”)
4) Robert Kirkman (writer of the comic series)
5) Glen Mazzara (“The Shield,” “Hawthorne”)
6) Adam Fierro (“The Shield,” “Dexter,” “24″)

LOOK AT THIS LINEUP!  Not one flimsy show on here!  This is a phenomenal working crew with award winning TV shows under their belt.  Holy crap where’s my flux capacitor, I need to get to October NOW!

Walking Dead Full Cast Photo And More!

500x_walking_dead-1

As October grows closer with each passing day I’m starting to get more and more excited.  I know it’s only July, but with all this great October news coming out, why would you still want it to be July?  There is just too much awesome coming this October that my excitement can’t be contained to just one month.

What do you think of The Walked Dead full cast pic overhead?  Pretty sick huh?  I love it!  Even though this is a color photo, the subtle and muted color scheme they used really gives it a feel to match the black and white illustrations in the comics.

It looks like the rumors that I wrote about last week turned out to be true.  Michelle MacLaren, co-executive producer and director for AMC’s Breaking Bad will be taking over for Frank Darabont as director for an episode of The Walking Dead.

AMC just posted an interview with Michelle on being an addict to the comic (issue 75 just released), and also about facing her fear of rats while filming.

Q: How did the opportunity to direct an episode of The Walking Dead come about?

A: AMC introduced me to Frank Darabont and Gale Anne Hurd, who really like Breaking Bad. Although The Walking Dead is a very different show to Breaking Bad, they mentioned incorporating some of the pace and style from Breaking Bad.

Q: Were you a comic book reader before this?

A: Well, the Archies when I was a kid. [Laughs] I am in love with graphic novels now, though. When AMC called about the project I immediately went out and got all the comics. I couldn’t put them down — I carried them everywhere I went. Graphic novels are such a visually creative world — it’s really interesting what they can do in one sketch. Now I’m hooked. I would love to find something else in this world to do.

Q: Your episode has a lot of elements that are not in The Walking Dead comics. Was it strange to tread new ground?

A: We always had the comic in mind. I love to shoot wide, graphic shots, so we had many moments in shooting this episode where we’d make choices because it was like a graphic novel, or it reminded us of the comic. Even though we got some in, I would have liked to have had time to shoot more long lens shots — I know Frank really likes that look — but it does take longer when you’re in certain situations, and this episode really required a lot of action. So things were a little bit more frenetic and fast-paced. [Laughs] I’m laughing because I’m thinking about some of our days, and I’m thinking, “God, that’s an understatement!”

Q: Any day in particular?

A: We were shooting on the street the other day, where we find Rick and Glenn in a rather dangerously challenging situation with walkers. We had 100 walkers, control of some downtown Atlanta city streets, and Rick and Glenn running for their lives. Both Andy [Lincoln] and Steven [Yuen] got so into it… well I don’t want to give anything away. Lets just say there are moments when you just have to pinch yourself and say, “This is so cool, I can’t believe I get to shoot this, I am in the middle of a graphic novel.”

Q: What’s the most challenging aspect of shooting this series?

A: This show creates its own post-apocalyptic world. I keep saying “OK guys, I know it’s an eighth of a page in the script, but it might as well say, ‘And Atlanta burns,’ because every scene there’s something happening.” You’re not just dealing with two people talking, there’s also 50 zombies banging at the door, and there is zombie goop and intestines and guts and everything around them, which is sticky — it sticks to the actors and sticks to everything. You have to be really cognizant of everything going on in this world, and the rules of this world. It’s very layered which of course makes it challenging and fun!

Q: You once described getting nightmares because of your work on The X-Files. Did you get any nightmares in Atlanta?

A: [Laughs] No, but when I’m directing and we’re rolling I really lose myself in the scene. So if somebody comes up and taps me on the shoulder, they will completely and utterly startle me, “Oh-my-God-there’s-a-zombie!” I have a major rat phobia, and we were shooting with some rats the other night, so I took an apple box and I stood on it, because if my feet weren’t touching the floor, the rat couldn’t touch me. And the still photographer, Scott [Garfield] kept looking at me and then down to my feet. And in his head, he was saying to me, “Why are you standing on the apple box?” But in my head, he was saying, “Hey, there’s a rat at your foot.” So I started going, “Where? Where! Where is it?!” [Laughs] It’s just these little things that can make you jumpy because you have this scary tension around you.

Q: It’s an interesting coincidence for you that both Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead feature an RV–

A: I thought you were going to say,”feature an axe.” I have an axe in this show. [Laughs] I thought it was funny that there was both an RV and an axe, and I thought there might be some Breaking Bad fans who go, “Hmmm?” But the axe doesn’t play a huge part, not like in Breaking Bad.

Q: Did you film it skimming along the ground at a close angle?

A: You may be on to me [Laughs]. I did a little, tiny homage to Breaking Bad. I didn’t do the exact same thing, but it was close. It was funny because Andy was carrying it, and he started to scrape it along the ground and I said, “Andy don’t do that.” [Laughs] “That is just waaaay too similar.”

Issue 75 Sneak Peek!

*Note: If you are not a constant reader, and you are going to read this know that there will be spoilers into what happens.  Just facts of life with comics people! Can’t start at issue 75 unless it’s the start of a new storyline!*

Walking Dead Updates

the-walking-dead

Good news and better news to report for you this week!

First up, I know that a lot of people have been concerned with who will be running with the series after Frank Darabont takes his leave after the pilot.  Well, Arrowinthehead is reporting that another AMC-er is up for bid.  Michelle MacLaren, long time producer of the X-Files and sometimes director of Breaking Bad, is said to be helming the second episode that is scheduled to shoot this week!

Now, this is still a bit of a rumor at the moment, so take it with a grain of salt, but know that AMC has the right idea.  Keep it in house, and keep it in camera!

The second bit of news is even more exciting.  If you aren’t familiar with the book (and you need to be before you watch this) then I need to say *SPOILER ALERT*.  For those who are up to speed and have started rereading all the issues then this will wow you big time.

Some new set photos have been released by On Location Vacations.  A few questions might pop into your head as you look at these.  Questions like “why are these people covered in blood?”

If you will recall there is a scene where Rick Grimes and Glenn are trying to get inside the heart of Atlanta, but the city is swarming with the undead.  Rick notices that the zombies never seem to attack one another and realized that its because they stink, bad.  So Rick and Glenn douse themselves in blood and quietly shuffle through the horde of zombies.

Walking Dead Interview

TWD-Greg-Nicotero-560

AMCTV.com has a really wicked interview with Greg Nicotero, master of the modern zombie.

Here’s a quick snippet:

Q: You’ve been creating zombies for George Romero for years. What made you want to tackle The Walking Dead?

A: I’ve been best friends with Frank Darabont since before he directed The Shawshank Redemption, and we share a similar interest and nostalgic devotion to George Romero and Night of the Living Dead. We started talking about this project probably three or four years ago, when Frank was talking about wanting to do something different with zombies, and what we could do to make these guys look fresh and original. And from then on, it’s just been like, Hey man! We get to create zombies!

Q: How do these zombies differ from the ones you created for Romero?

A: We used the graphic novel certainly as inspiration. We’ve always tried to push the envelope, and because I’ve done so many other projects it’s always one of those things where you finish a movie and go, “Oh man next time I know how we can make it better. And after that I know how we can make it even better than that.” We’ve taken everything that we’ve learned on all these other projects, and applied them in terms of using new materials and new techniques – even something as simple as a zombie getting shot in the head: We really sat down and worked through the best way to make that look realistic and practical.

Dr. Who Rocks The Synthesizer (Happy Monday)

mattsmith

In one synthesizer fueled acid trip rendition of the 11th Doctor’s theme song, Matt Smith has officially tipped to scales to become my favorite Doctor…EVER. Sure David Tennent had the acting chops to take the stage as Hamlet, but Matt Smith took the stage with LASERS and techno. Is there even any doubt anymore how awesome the 11th Doctor is? I mean just look at that bow-tie!
